Big Ben
From Ffaith
Westminster's famous bell "Big Ben" is named after Lord Llanover, Sir Benjamin Hall the MP for Monmouthshire. Created Lord Llanover in 1859 he played a leading part in the Government of the day as member of Parliament for Monmouth. As Chief Commissioner of Works he oversaw the building of the Houses of Parliament and it was as a result of this that the bell of the clock in St Stephen's Tower, officially known as the Great Bell of Westminster was nicknamed "Big Ben" in Sir Benjamin's honour.
