Billy Hughes

From Ffaith

William Morris (Billy) Hughes was born in Pimlico, London on 25 September 1862 of Welsh parents. His Welsh speaking father William Hughes was born in Holyhead, Anglesey, in about 1825. His mother was a farmer's daughter from Llansaintffraid. After his mother's death when he was seven Billy lived with his father's sister in Llandudno and also spent some time with his mother's relatives in rural Montgomeryshire, where he picked up some fluency in Welsh.

Billy was Australia’s 7th and longest serving Prime Minister (until 1957 when Robert Menzies overtook Hughes’ record term from 1915 to 1923). He was also the last Australian Prime Minister to be born outside Oz. Hughes’ other record still stands: no parliamentarian has surpassed his 51 years and 7 months of continuous service as a member of Australia’s House of Representatives – from 1901 to 1952.

During the first World War Hughes communicated with Lloyd George in Welsh.
