Canned beer

From Ffaith

Can we can it - yes we can

The 3rd of December 1935 was a momentous date for the Welsh tinplate industry - and for beer drinkers right across Britain. On that day Llanelli brewers, Felinfoel, released its Pale Ale in 10oz cans to become the first European brewery to sell canned beer. The World's first canned beer, Kruger Cream Ale, had been tested in Richmond, Viginia on January 24th 1935, trials that were watched keenly by industry eyes. The beer was a success and by the end of the year several major American breweries were selling beer in cans. After trial batches Felinfoel began to produce canned beer for public sale from 19 March 1936. By the end of that year two million cans had been produced, and by the end of 1937 over forty different brands were being marketed by some twenty-three British breweries. Among them Lassell & Sharman of Caergwrle, in North Wales, which canned its Famous strong Ale.
