George Latham
From Ffaith
George Latham was the Cardiff City coach responsible for the team's greatest period of success. Between 1911 and 1936 Cardiff won the FA Cup (1927) and only missed out on the League Championship by goal difference. As a player he appeared for Wrexham FC, Liverpool FC, Southport FC, and Cardiff City, and played 12 times for Wales. He also managed the British team at the 1924 Olympic Games.
George, born in Newtown in 1881, won the Military Cross for Gallantry during the First World War. The citation read, "He pushed forward with the remainder of his platoon under heavy machine-gun and rifle fire, and cleared and consolidated a position of great value. With the help of another officer, he captured a number of enemy prisoners."
He died in his town of birth in 1939. The local football team named their ground Latham Park in his honour.
He is a Welsh Sporting Hall of Fame inductee.
