John Disley

From Ffaith


Born in Corris, a village near Snowdonia, John Disley was an Athlete of great repute. He won an Olympic steeplechase bronze in 1952 - the first Welshman to win an Olympic track and field medal - and finished sixth in the 1956 final. Disley is also responsible for setting five British records in the steeplechase and four at two miles. He also set Welsh records at six different distances. With Chris Brasher, he was the leading pioneeer of Orienteering in the UK and was one of the founders of the London Marathon. Disley became vice-chairman of the UK Sports Council in 1974, a post he held until 1982.

John is a keen conservationalist with a particular love of Snowdonia. He was elected president of the Snowdonia Society in 2003. He is a member of the Welsh Sporting Hall of Fame
