Llewelyn Kenrick

From Ffaith

Llewelyn Kenrick was a solicitor and international footballer. He was born into the land-owning, industrialist Kenrick dynasty of Wynn Hall, Ruabon, near Wrexham. After attending Ruabon Grammar School he trained as a solicitor and practiced at Ruabon but always remained a keen football player, playing for Ruabon Druids and Shropshire Wanderers.

Kenrick saw a letter in a newspaper challenging the Wales to form its own football team. Rising to the challenge Kenrick formed the Football Association of Wales and helped draw up its constitution in the Wynnstay Arms Hotel in Ruabon in 1876. In March of that year the Welsh national side played their inaugral match against Scotland losing heavily with a 4-0 scoreline.

Kenrick appeared for Wales several times after that first match, lastly in 1881 when he was a last minute stand in for a missing teammate and played in his everyday clothes.
