Pirates

From Ffaith

It is claimed that Wales produced more pirates per mile of coastline than any other European country. The Welsh definitely excelled at plundering and warfare on the high seas, with some of the most successful pirates ever: scurrilous sea dogs such as Sir Henry Morgan, former Governor of Jamaica, described as a "murderous monster" a "depraved, vicious, treacherous, almost unparalleled human brute"; Black Bart Roberts, first to use the Skull and Crossbones; Hywel Davis, who set Roberts on his course for piracy; and the infamous Colyn Dolphyn who terrorised the Bristol Channel during the late 15th century.

Other less famous Welsh Pirates include: Tomos Prys of Plas Iolyn, and Pyrs Gruffydd, the heir to the Penrhyn estate near Bangor.
