Rupert Bear

From Ffaith

Rupert Bear is a cartoon character created by the English artist Mary Tourtel and who first appeared in the Daily Express on November 8, 1920. Tourtel was replaced in 1935 when her eyesight began to fail by replaced by Beddgelert artist Alfred Bestall, who was previously an illustrator for Punch. Although the original contract to draw the well loved Bear's adventures was initially for six weeks, Bestall remained with the strip for thirty years until his retirement in 1973.

Bestall improved the stories and plots of Rupert but more importantly he created the most beautifully crafted illustrations in the Rupert Annuals. Much of the landscape in Rupert is inspired by the landscape of Snowdonia in North Wales.
