Sir George Everest

Mount Everest was named after a Welshman, Sir George Everest, born in Gwernvale Manor near Crickhowell in Breconshire. The highest peak in the world, recognised as such by a government survey of India in 1852 named the awesome mountain Peak XV. The Tibetans knew the mountain as as Chomolungma (Goddess Mother of the World).

The former Surveyor General of India, had the honour bestowed on him by his successor Andrew Waugh after Sir George had conducted the first triangulation survey of central India.
