Matthew was born in Carmarthen, Dyfed in September and turned professional at the tender age of 17 in 1994. Ranked 6 in the world at the time of writing he has so far failed to gain the coveted World Snooker title, coming closest in 2000 when he was beaten by by fellow Welshman [[Mark Williams (snooker)|Mark Williams.
An accomplished break-builder, Stevens has also reached the final of the Liverpool Victoria UK Championship on two consequetive occassions, losing 10-6 to John Higgins in 1998 and 10-8 to Williams the following year.
In 1999 he proved himself a winner by completing a notable Masters double, beating Higgins 9-7 in the final of the Regal Masters and Ken Doherty in the Benson and Hedges Masters at Wembley.
